Thank God for EfM!
by Bishop John E. Privett
Dear Friends,
As the scripture says, we are called as Christian people to give thanks at all times (Ephesians 5:20). Nevertheless, it is true that as October arrives, along with the traditional Thanksgiving weekend, we often find ourselves taking time to reflect more consciously on all the reasons we have to give thanks. This year I am particularly mindful of the difference that Education for Ministry (EfM) has made in the lives of thousands of individuals and in the life of the Church. EfM is a four-year program of study for inquiring lay people who desire to deepen their knowledge of Christian history, theology and Scripture, and engage in conversations about how it all relates to daily life and ministry. It is not meant to be training for ordination, but rather a way to enrich and empower Christian laywomen and men in their own life of faith. The program originated at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee and is credited through the Seminary at Sewanee. Since its beginnings in the United States it has spread to many countries throughout the world. Our Diocese of Kootenay is the sponsoring diocese for EfM in Canada. For over 30 years EfM Canada has supported the structure, trained the mentors, and offered the curriculum that guides the program. It has been a great success and one of the best-kept secrets in the church! I want you to know of it and this month I give thanks for the ministry of EfM and I give thanks for the hundreds of people who have participated in EfM groups over the years.
For the past 6 years, Canon Peter Davison of this Diocese, a frequent contributor to The HighWay, has been the Director of EfM Canada. He has announced his retirement effective September 30, 2009. Peter has done a stellar job of promoting, supporting and guiding the work of EfM during these years. Peter's commitment to the education and support of ordinary Christians has been enormous. His wise and passionate leadership has been a great gift and he will be missed. And so this month I will also give thanks for Peter's faithful ministry with EfM. He leaves a legacy which includes a more Biblically and theologically literate community of learners who are active in their parishes across the country.
Finally, I give thanks that the Rev. Dr. Cathy Hall has accepted my appointment to succeed Peter as Director of EfM Canada. Cathy has a long history with EfM and she focussed the research for her doctoral thesis on EfM. She brings a great deal of commitment and knowledge about its unique educational methods and content and has a vision for its future. Cathy will continue to strengthen and develop this important lay education program. For the first time this fall, an online EfM group has been offered and the response to the idea has been enthusiastic. I fully expect that the online work will expand in the future.
In my view, EfM is an excellent resource for adult Christians to grow in their understanding of the Holy Scriptures and Christian tradition in company with others. If you have felt a desire to deepen your own understanding of Christian faith and life, then I encourage you to consider the Education for Ministry program.
