Narrative Budget 2008

Our diocese is a companionship of Anglican parishes and shared ministries in 53 congregations spread throughout the Kootenay and Okanagan valleys, under the pastoral care and leadership of our Bishop, John Privett.

At our last Diocesan Council it was requested that we make available to all members the Narrative Budget for 2008. After reading the narrative budget, if you have any questions do not hesitate to contact the synod office.

Our Diocesan Ministry

Caring for others $124,787
We serve God by supporting the work of the church throughout BC, northern Canada and around the world. Such contributions remind us that our diocese is an active partner within a much larger community of Anglicans. We also support the wider church through PWRDF the Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund.

We support three theological centres. Sorrento Centre continues to provide training for ministry by all people. The Vancouver School of Theology provides specialized training for clergy and pastoral workers. The Education for Ministry program operates in Canada under management from our Diocese, and, through a sustaining membership in the Anglican Foundation, grants and loans are made to parishes and church organizations across Canada.

We support the restoration of the deaconate in our diocese, so that deacons may bring the needs of the world to our attention and assist us in our mission of living and proclaiming the gospel in the world. The diocesan Ecojustice and Social Action task force gives leadership in addressing ecological and justice issues.

Caring for each other $140,068
This is truly a partnership where all parishes are asked to contribute on a “fair share” basis toward a vision of ministry.

The Bishop, Bishop’s Executive Assistant, BARD’s (Bishop, Archdeacons, Regional Deans), and two Youth Ministry support staff give pastoral care and ministry support for all our parishes.

Seed money is provided to each of the six Regions, to support programs of benefit to all parishes in their life of ministry.

The Diocesan Camp and Youth Fund enable children and young people to grow in their faith and experience of Christian community.

Our diocesan council and committees (Administration, Budget, Stewardship, and others) help us to address important concerns.

The Kootenay Forward Fund is a limited fund that is available to provide grants toward stipendiary ministry. In 2007 the KFF assisted three parishes and two part-time youth ministry support staff for the eastern and western parts of the diocese. Diocesan funding of the KFF has not been included in the 2008 Budget.

Support for Synod ‘06 Programs that relate to implementing Church Directions to further the vision of Growing Churches, Proclaiming Christ, Living Faith and Empowering Mission in the Diocese.

Caring for our clergy $7,800
Effective clergy leadership throughout the Diocese is supported by contributions towards professional development events, retreats, family and spousal conferences when possible, an employee and family assistance plan, and a car purchase plan.

Keeping in touch $76,700
In a Diocese as large as ours, maintaining communication (travel, telephone, computers/website and postage) is vital so we can all participate in decision making. Working together is important, so we participate in regular meetings at the provincial, national and international levels.

Our newspapers, the HighWay and the Anglican Journal, help keep us informed of both diocesan events and national news.

Keeping it together $128,425
This category includes all diocesan office line items with the exception of communication expenses.

Our diocesan office staff is available to assist parishes with administrative concerns and help us stay in touch. They are: Jill, Administrative Assistant; and Bonnie, Finance Manager.

The office has resource materials available for your use.

Remembering our stories $3,800
While we continue to carry the Gospel into the world, it is good to know the stories of those who have gone before us. We have one of the most efficient diocesan archives in Canada to help us do this with the assistance of our archivist, Howard Hisdal. All vital records are kept there, as well as many of the anecdotes and memories of our life together.

Total Cost in 2008 is $481,580. This is down from the total cost of $502,341 in 2007.

This vision is supported by:
Parishes of Dio. of Kootenay $469,288
KFF Grant $6,000
Other Grants $8,000
Investments $20,000
Donations $11,000
Miscellaneous Income $1,800
Exec. Accrual Acct. $7,920
2007 transfer $3,804

We are committed to keeping a balanced budget.
