Synod will play a major role in the lives of many Anglicans in the Diocese over the next month and probably will continue for some time to come. Articles will be written and hopefully discussions will take place prior to the event itself. Those who have been elected by their respective parishes have a great responsibility to shoulder. Currently, we do not have a formal way of involving parish members until a topic becomes "hot." We leave it up to individuals who take on the responsibility of being our Synod "Reps" to voice and vote, as his or her convictions direct. It is important, however, to communicate your opinions to your representative. Synod representatives have received three documents for review: a Financial Report (34 pages), Synod Reports (55 pages) and Synod Proceedings (32 pages). That’s a lot of material for them to go over.
The subject of “same sex blessing” is again on the Synod agenda. This topic has polarized our Church and caused a great deal of disunity. Recently, the Diocese of Ottawa institued a same sex liturgy on a trial basis.
In the hope of bringing some healing in this area, The HighWay has included a lengthy article in this edition written by Linda Chamberlayne. Linda attempts to shed light on the difference between "liberals" and "conservatives," as she felt that short articles cannot address the subject adequately.
Reiterating Bishop John's words, the Synod needs your prayers. The 2009 Diocese of Kootenay Synod takes place in Kelowna from Friday May 15 to Sunday May 17.
On another note, The HighWay may have finally "come of age"; it now receives White House press releases as part of President Obama’s transparency policy. This is primarily in the area of religious issues, but I was pleased to receive a transcription of the Presidential Address. In addition, as mentioned in the Synod reports, a copy of The HighWay is kept by the National Archives in Ottawa, which gives testimony to the lives of Anglicans and an important historical record of our activities—our legacy for future generations.
