Over the last few months, in addition to The HighWay's regular columnists, we have had several good articles by Sally Scales. This month, Sally has submitted the front-page story "Return Call to the Arctic."
What I really like about Sally's articles is that they are about people: the people who are members of her local congregation. In addition, her photographs are endearing and poignant. It was my vision for The HighWay to receive articles like Sally's, especially from young people.
Don Chadderton regularly sends photographs of people from the church he attends, as do Frank and Wendy Warburton. It's not always possible to publish everything, but it makes my job easier when there is a good selection of material.
The new series "Many Ways to Pray," for which Ken Watts wrote the introductory article, was well received by many. This month we have the second part of the series by Flo Masson on the Anglican Rosary.
In my own church, I've been pleasantly surprised when people come to church committee meetings brandishing articles that have appeared in The HighWay. This is an indication of the relevance of the contributions that have been submitted. I'm waiting in anticipation for the articles and photographs from those going on the "To Mexico with Love" mission this month.
Just a few tips if you might be inspired to submit an article: the writing style of The HighWay is more like a magazine than a newspaper. Unfortunately, some people send 30 words and call it an article. That's good if you are sending just photographs. However, a good article should be at least 300 words long and a maximum of 600 words.
Giving the names of the people who are in the photographs and where and when an event took place is important. Try to take action shots and less of people sitting down or standing in a group. The size of a photograph is important too. Now that digital cameras are readily available, the best way to send images is by email. Each image file should be as large as possible but not more than 2 Mega pixels. Nevertheless, we still accept non-electronic submissions.
It is the aim of The HighWay to have timely relevant articles. If an event is close to the deadline, please send an email describing your intended submission, so that we can reserve space.
Send your articles and photo submissions by email to thehighway@shaw.ca. Articles that do not make it into the printed issue will be added to the Website late pages at www.anglicanhighway.com.
